Richard Aliberti - Sculpture, Politics, Poetry
and a Drum Machine
"Multimedia
artist" Richard Aliberti not only earns the label,
he lives it. Though he's made his living primarily
as a sculptor, he's equally well-known around town
for his music and poetry. Whereas many artists find
their voice in a certain medium, Aliberti has a strong
sense of his own artistic voice. For him, the challenge
is to find the appropriate vehicle to express his
latest ideas. At a recent one-man performance at the
Zeitgeist Gallery, Aliberti read poems over a barrage
of drum machine and synthesizer music, all set behind
a mass of oddly shaped plastic and colored lights,
creating the mind-bending effect of something out
of the movie Liquid Sky.
Though
Aliberti adamantly asserts that his art is primarily
concerned with intuitive beauty and exists to provide
escape from thought, his work is often thought-provoking,
as the case with his politically poetry.
